The History of Cococay

Average Temperature in April:  87

Language:  English

You've always dreamed of having your own private island; somewhere you could play, swim or just swing in a hammock all day. This is the day. CocoCay® is for the exclusive use of Royal Caribbean passengers. There are pristine beaches, clear waters, and ruins to explore.

At Cococay, the history of the Bahamas and the Legacy of piracy come together.  It is claimed that Columbus first landed on the Bahamian Island of San Salvador in 1492.  Later came Ponce de Leon, then came the pirates.  Nearby Nassau was a haven for pirates.  The renowned pirate Blackbeard had no trouble attracting local recruits for his forays.

According to the legend, Blackbeard set out one day with two ships to attack a large galleon.  During the skirmish the Captain of the second ship was killed and an ordinary sailor nicknamed "Blade", seized the opportunity to commandeer the vessel and sail off with the treasure.  Blackbeard's own ship had been heavily damaged during the battle so he was unable to pursue.  He vowed however to find Blade and retrieve the gold.

The legend says that Blade sailed Northwest, eventually hiding on Cococay.  Little did he know that he was in the Berry Islands, well known among the pirates of Nassau as the "Bury" Islands, a popular location to bury treasures.  It wasn't long before Blackbeard found Blade and his crew.  In the ensuing battle, Blade was killed.  Cococay then reverted to its splendid solitude.

It has been said that Blade buried the treasure here and that it has never been found.  Look around, Cococay just may hold a better welcome than you ever imagined.
